On September 1 our chapter meeting featured an insightful CEU, "The Art of Specifying Natural Stone," presented by the Natural Stone Institute and sponsored by Vermont Quarries at an ABC Stone showroom. Vermont Quarries General Manager Peter Prvulovic gave a dynamic presentation on the ways in which stone can be used, and how designers can maximize its effectiveness and ensure a smooth construction process. Peter reviewed different categories of stone, and the applications for which they are best suited. He emphasized the importance of correct, detailed specifications to ensure that the product is delivered and installed as designed. The National Stone Institute website has various resources for designers. Peter also emphasized the need for interior designers to work with current samples—the look of a stone can vary within a quarry as it is excavated, and from quarry to quarry. He noted that sealers do not make natural stone waterproof or stain proof—designers and our clients need to understand how these surfaces will perform in daily life. The presentation included various examples of beautiful stone installations, and fascinating footage of Vermont Quarries operations. There were lively conversations before and after the CEU, fueled by some fall-inspired passed bites—the mini caramel apples served on cinnamon sticks were a particular hit!
