Candidate Statements
ASLER VALERO: I would like to continue working on the legacy of a stronger chapter that embraces new members, sponsors, and new ideas, new people. A chapter that trains new leaders, integrates the community, and is inclusive. Education, training, and knowledge are very important for everyone, especially in our community where technologies and trends are changing fast. CEUs are essential. Networking in NYC is key to keeping our community together and growing.
MICHELLE JACOBSON: My name is Michelle Jacobson, and I am honored to be a candidate for Incoming President of the NY Metro Chapter of ASID. ASID is more than just a professional organization—it is a community, a source of inspiration, and a driving force in shaping the future of interior design.
As we look ahead, I am committed to leading with a focus on sustainability, financial strength, and professional growth. Sustainability is no longer an option; it is a necessity. As a leading ASID Chapter, financial strength is also not an option. I will help our chapter raise funds, spend wisely, and promote professional growth for all of our members, including students and emerging professionals.
I hope that we will be able to gain strategic sponsorships, engage and add to our industry partnerships, and host high-impact events that elevate our chapter while generating necessary funding. With the support of the rest of the chapter and its members, we will ensure that ASID New York Metro not only survives but thrives.
Together, we will build a chapter that leads with vision, invests in its future, and upholds the values that make our profession so impactful. I ask for your support, your creative ideas, and your endless passion for design as we embark on this journey... together.
SUSAN TULLY: Communication is critical to the success of the chapter—it’s how we let our members know about our many events, support our industry partners, and highlight important issues. DESIGN magazine and our social media are critical tools for us to spotlight our members’ work and promote our profession to the general public. I worked for many years as a writer and editor before becoming an interior designer, and I bring both skill sets to the Communications Director position. My career includes hospitality and residential design. I also spent 8 years as an adjunct professor of interior design, which is a great background for explaining the scope, and the nuances, of our profession.I began my ASID involvement with the Washington Metro Chapter, where I served as Communications and then Finance Director. I made wonderful friends and great networking connections there, and those numbers have grown since I joined the New York Metro Chapter in 2018. I’ve been writing for DESIGN magazine since 2021 and always enjoy the chance to interview the fascinating people who make up our chapter. As a member of the Advocacy Committee I’ve learned more about the specific challenges facing our profession in New York, and how ASID is working to improve the situation. It is an honor to be nominated as Communications Director. I look forward to a productive year, with new and exciting issues of DESIGN, expanding our social media content, and continuing to promote ASID’s mission and members!
JAMIE KEEL: As a passionate advocate for the interior design industry, Residential A&D Representative for Cambria, I am excited to pursue the role of ASID Director at Large to help advance our profession, support our members, and strengthen ASID’s impact. I have 3 years of experience in interior design, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of design and the importance of a strong professional community.
Having served on the Board of Directors for NKBA Manhattan and IDS NYC, I understand the challenges and opportunities facing designers today. I will work to bridge the gap between emerging and seasoned professionals, ensuring that ASID remains a dynamic and forward-thinking organization.
I believe in the value of design to shape healthier, more sustainable, and more inclusive spaces. As Director at Large, I will leverage my experience, leadership skills, and passion for our industry to support ASID’s mission and empower our members to thrive.
I would be honored to serve and bring fresh perspectives to the board
CIELO CORTES: The Emerging Professional Chair interests me because it offers an opportunity to support and empower the next generation of interior designers. As an active member of the design community, I am passionate about fostering connections, providing resources, and creating opportunities that help emerging professionals navigate their careers with confidence.
In this role, I hope to strengthen mentorship and networking initiatives that bridge the gap between education and practice. By collaborating with industry leaders, local firms, and universities, I aim to provide valuable programming, including panel discussions, workshops, and skill-building events that address the evolving needs of young designers. Additionally, I am committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity, ensuring all voices are represented within our chapter.
With my experience in both design and leadership, I bring a fresh perspective to the board. I am particularly interested in integrating technology and sustainable practices into conversations about the future of design. Through innovation and collaboration, I hope to inspire emerging professionals to embrace new challenges and contribute meaningfully to our industry.
Ultimately, my goal is to cultivate a supportive and dynamic community where emerging designers feel empowered to grow, learn, and lead. Serving as the Emerging Professional Chair would allow me to contribute to ASID’s mission while helping shape the future of interior design in New York.
